Moderation versus censorship: the European Parliament’s red line

Politics & Society

Short thesis:

Come and meet the European Parliament’s Community Managers from all 28 EU countries, the faces behind the national Facebook pages and Twitter accounts of the Parliament. Together, we’ll discuss moderation dos and don’ts and focus on the expectations of users.

Description:

Spam, trolling, insults: without moderation social media platforms can quickly turn from World Wide Web to Wild Wild West. Keeping an eye on comments is necessary to ensure that an online conversation does not become a no man’s land. But is it that easy to draw the line between what’s acceptable and what’s not? Is there a “one size fits all” solution for all European countries? Can a moderation policy offer black and white solutions to grey area issues? And how can a public institution such as the European Parliament have a successful moderation policy without falling into the pit of censorship?
