Lies van Roessel graduated in 2008 at Utrecht University in Media Studies with a master’s thesis on game literacy. She worked at HKU, University of the Arts Utrecht until 2014 as a teacher and researcher of design processes of applied games. There she contributed to the development of health games and educational games, for instance GATE pilots Carkit and Project Dream as well as follow-up project DJ Fiero. From 2014 Lies works at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) in the department Policy & Governance. Her current research is part of the project Circulation of Cultural Goods and concerns practices of innovation and imitation in the games sector. This study explores where to draw the fine line between being inspired by and copying existing games - both from a legal and an informal perspective.
